My cousin received his wishÌýin 2019, a year after hisÌýdiagnosis.ÌýÌýMy cousin loves video games and technology.Ìý His wish was forÌýaÌýhand buildÌýpersonal computer from Corsair that had not been released to the market yet.ÌýThe wish for my cousin brought our family a sense of hope, joy, andÌýcomfort,Ìýknowing he had something to look forward to.Ìý

Ìý

What did the Make-A-Wish experience mean to you or your family?ÌýÌý

ForÌýme,Ìýit provided a sense of comfort knowing that my cousin had something to look forward to.Ìý AfterÌýhisÌýdiagnosis,ÌýtheÌýtreatments,Ìýdoctor’sÌýappointments,Ìýa newÌýschool,ÌýJimÌýwas able to knowÌýhe could come home and work on his computer or game with friends.ÌýThat brought a sense of peace.ÌýÌý

Ìý

Was there a particular moment from the experience that stands out most to you?ÌýÌý

The entire journey felt so surrealÌýtoÌýme as his big cousin.ÌýI am close with myÌýfamilyÌýand to knowÌýnot only wasÌýheÌýsuffering,Ìýbut thatÌýmy aunt and uncle and his siblings wereÌýhurtingÌýand worriedÌýputÌýeverything intoÌýperspective.ÌýI just remember thinking why and how and that he was so young.Ìý

Ìý

How did family, friends, or the community support you during this journey?Ìý

It is incredible to see how my cousin’sÌýfriends and the community came together to support him, my aunt,Ìýuncle,Ìýand cousins. It means a great dealÌýto meÌýthat SJVC/Â鶹´«Ã½ÌýisÌýinvolvedÌýwithÌýthe Make-A-Wish foundation.Ìý I believe in giving back and this is one way we can do it.ÌýWhen I was asked to lead the Make-A-Wish campaign across our organizations, IÌýimmediatelyÌýthought of my cousin and how Make-A-WishÌýimpactedÌýmy family during a trying time. I can only hope to give back and provide the same sense of comfort for another wish kid andÌýfamily in need of hope.Ìý

Ìý

What would you want others to understand about the importance of organizations like Make-A-Wish?ÌýÌý

Make-A-Wish provides hope for children with illnesses.ÌýÌýWishÌýkidsÌýare childrenÌýthat should be having funÌýand being able to be kids.ÌýÌýThey should beÌýlooking forward to theirÌýfreshmenÌýyear of high schoolÌýand all that comes with being aÌýchild,Ìýnot the stress ofÌýall that comes with their diagnosis.Ìý

Ìý

What would you say to someone considering donating orÌýparticipatingÌýin this campaign?ÌýÌý

I would say that every dollar counts.ÌýÌýEven byÌýparticipating by sharing a post or spreadingÌýawareness,Ìýwe can make a difference in children’s lives.ÌýÌýBy coming together as a community, we can make a difference.Ìý

Ìý

How has this experience stayed with you over time?Ìý

I had the honor of attending a Make-A-Wish gala in Frenso, CA andÌýhearingÌýthe stories of other childrenÌýbrought upÌýthe emotions I had when I first heard of my cousin having cancer.ÌýKnowing these wishesÌýbringsÌýhope to families will always stick with me.Ìý

Ìý

In what ways has it inspired you personally or professionally?ÌýÌý

Make-A-Wish has inspired me both personally and professionally.ÌýÌýI have a newfound appreciation for our healthcare workers. Looking back,Ìýwhat’sÌýthe most meaningful lessonÌýyou’veÌýtaken from this experience?Ìý

The power of support and coming together.ÌýÌýThisÌýreally makes a difference in times of need.ÌýI have also learned that if you cannot donate, you can listen, be present and to be kind.Ìý You never know what people areÌýgoingÌýthrough.ÌýÌý

Ìý

Is there anything elseÌýyou’dÌýlike to share about your experience or message to our campus community?ÌýÌý
